Community event in Harmony Square to talk preventing medication harms

Community members are encouraged to come by Harmony Square in Dandenong on Tuesday 14th of May from 11.30am for a special screening ScriptWise’s short documentary on preventing medication harms with the introduction of the real-time prescription monitoring system, SafeScript.

Event attendees will have the opportunity to speak with local experts, ask any burning questions about SafeScript and medication concerns and enjoy the documentary on the big screen.

About three-quarters of all overdose deaths in Greater Dandenong involved prescription medications between 2009-2015.[i]

SafeScript will give relevant health professionals access to their patients’ prescription history of certain high-risk medications such as opioids and sedative medications.

In six months during its study period, the system has helped health professionals identify around 4,500 patients at risk of harm of overdose from visiting multiple clinics or pharmacies in Western Victoria.[ii]

ScriptWise spokesperson Megan Newcomb says that SafeScript is an important opportunity for people to learn more about the best treatments for managing ongoing pain, anxiety and sleep issues.

“We’ve seen that over the past ten years, people in Dandenong are being more and more affected by the use of medications which can be addictive such as opioids and sleeping tablets,” said Ms Newcomb.

“Someone may start taking these medications to manage a severe injury or to get rest during a stressful time, but don’t realise if they continue using them, they are more likely to experience unwanted side-effects.”

“We hear a lot about the opioid epidemic in the US, but this is an something that is happening here in our communities too but we do have the tools to start addressing it.”

“If you’re concerned about your or a family member’s medication use, or want to know more about SafeScript, I encourage you to come by Harmony Square on May 14,” said Ms Newcomb.
