Community event in Bairnsdale aims to prevent prescription medication harms
Community members are invited to attend an event at the Mall Stage on Nicholson Street in Bairnsdale at 11:30am on March 29 to talk reducing medication harms with not-for-profit organisation ScriptWise.
Coronial data shows that over 90% of the total overdoses in East Gippsland between 2009 and 2015 involved prescription medications.
Locals will have the opportunity to speak with local health experts and watch a short documentary about the upcoming implementation of Victoria’s real-time prescription monitoring system, SafeScript.
Rustie Lassam, a Gippsland resident, will also share her personal story of recovery from a 32 year dependence on prescription medications at the event.
Ms Lassam first became dependent on opioid pain medications after she experienced pain in her back when she was 15.
“The stigma around this issue means it can be really hard to talk about what’s happening and get help,” says Ms Lassam.
“But this is a medical condition that can happen to anyone and there are effective ways to manage it,” says Ms Lassam.
Ms Lassam encourages community members to attend the event which is being held in support of the upcoming implementation of SafeScript in April.
SafeScript will give relevant health professionals access to their patients’ prescription history of certain high-risk medications such as opioids and sedative medications.
The system came online in Western Victoria in October and in two months identified almost 3,300 patients at risk of harm or overdose from visiting multiple clinics or pharmacies.
